When you send a message or make a call, the phone sends a signal to a nearby tower. The distributive antenna systems captures this information and relays it to the ground through a wire or cable. Your data can go two one of two places, either to a backhaul located beneath the ground along with other people’s requests. It can also go right back out the antenna depending on the amount of information residing in the backhaul. If it does go there, it is then sent back to the top once its turn has come. If you are moving, it will hop from antenna to antenna until it gets back to you. The signal is then accepted into your personal phone through its own antenna and the message appears on your screen. This process happens in a matter of seconds.
Identifying Cell Phone Towers
Distinguishing which tower reaching into the sky is getting your phone signal is easier than you think. One simple identifier for a cell tower is the metal triangle near the top with smaller antenna sticking from it. These are usually dedicated to a specific cell phone service provider. There are also other critical parts attached to the tower such as microwave arrays that accept the signal coming in and boost those going out. Below the tower is typically a building that houses equipment to provide power to it so it will function. There are also relays and other systems that allow the carriers to operate their technology from that particular tower.
